Theocracy Sucks

Don't politicize churches! Project Fair Play.

James Jamerson Still Not in SC Hall of Fame.

UPDATE: James Jamerson has been rejected for the 11th time.
This after the mayor of Fort Mill publicly wrestles with the idea of Barack Obama being the anti-christ leads one to wonder why Strom Thurmond is in the SC Hall of Fame and James Jamerson is not.

Morning Commute Music

I've always been a proponent of mass transit even when I don't agree with how
C.A.T.S. does it. But I am fortunate to live off of two bus routes and to work at the hub of the spoke/wheel bus system. Since outfitting my Blackberry with a little SDMicro action I've been enjoying
checking my internets and listening to tunes. Here's what I listened to while the less fortunate were trapped in their cars:

  1. Nina Simone - tomorrow is my turn

  2. Githead - these days

  3. Kristin Hersh - fly around my blue-eyed girl

  4. Mendoza Line - mysterious in black

  5. The Heavy - in the morning

  6. Hello Tokyo - pull the trigger

  7. Sarah Vaughn (Bye bye) peter gunn theme

  8. Plastic Operator why don't you

  9. Grand Ole Party - gypsy march

  10. Rage Against The Machine - take the power back

We're at the
Guadalupe Cafe' in the lovely mountain town of
Sylva, NC
tomorrow. We're playing with
The Brothels (Asheville, NC). Stop by if you are in
the area.

in which the illicitizen gets unpleasant surprise...

(While I am stuck in flood caused Charlotte traffic I might as well update the blog...I am on the bus btw. Fear not metrolina commuters.)
So in true illi fashion we arrived tres early at the Skylight exchange/Nightlight club in Chapel Hill thursday (8/21).But to our surprise, dismay, chagrin etc... The Skylight portion of the venue (bookstore) was in the process of being disassembled. Nail-y boards and disgruntled baby boomers were abound. In short, the show was obviously Not happening there that night.
Fortunately we ran into the other band slated to perform that night (the Shudders) and they had driven all the way from Arlington to get their rock on. While Steve and I walked back to drop the news on Maria (yipe!), Janique Shudders called the Cave and got them to agree to let us play an early show. Night-saved.Big thanks to The Shudders, Michelle and Matt V from the Cave; and Beloved Binge (for riding from Durham and tracking us down despite us having already played)...I willadd links when I get to a proper keyboard.
Toodles from the #27 on Monroe rd.

Last night / Tonight

Last night:

We saw an awesome band at a newish venue here in Charlotte.
Band: J Karner and the Petersen Brothers. From Virginia Beach, VA. I hope they comeback. They are playing in Myrtle Beach tonight.
Venue: Charlotte Underground. Holy f$ck, this is right down the road from my house (basically). It is in the old Leather & Lace strip club. Great sound.

Tonight:

KEG & CUE w/ thank you, spaceman.
See ya around.

Rains = Pours

Hey everyone, come out to the Money in Rock Hill Saturday. We just got tapped to do a fill in. Come early, I think we go on at 8:30pm. I am not sure about the other bands yet but I do know we are playing with Rita's Gift. They are also coming down to N Augusta 8/8 to play the Highlander. RAWK!

6/27 recap of The Highlander show

The Highlander
133 Georgia Ave
N Augusta, South Carolina 29841
Description w/ ANGWISH!

Wow that Angwish puts on a heck of a rock show. Since we were playing on all their gear we all piled in Maria's Yaris with the guitars. Super nice place. We got there early. I recommend the "Scotch Eggs." Angwish laid the groundwork with a hot first set. We played our thing. This was our longest set to day (17 songs). People seemed to genuinely be into it. Then Angwish played a dessert set. Aaaaand since they are going to GREECE (the one in Europe, not Athens GA or Paris Texas) in August there was an opening for us to come back to the Highlander 08/08/08! See you there!

6/21 recap of the K & C show

Keg & Cue
2135 South Tryon Street
Charlotte, North Carolina 28203
Description:DETAILS w/ ANALOG DAZE

First of our residency gigs at the Keg & Cue. What a super place?!
Analog Daze treated us to some of their new songs. It rained like a @#$^@#$& and I had to partially unassemble my amplifier to get the wet out. Anyway, suffice to say I got a new amp. Hoo boy. Sorry, no pics. Vince was feeling a little sicked out with the allergies.

Long Story Short

Hey, sorry we've been all kinds of busy either practicing, writing new stuff or playing shows. Here's a brief recap of things gone on.
So yeah, we broke down between the record store show (below) in Raleigh and the Juggling Gypsy. A tire blew apart somewhere in or near Duplin County. We ended up trying to find a gas station where I could change it and basically rode the treadless tire about five miles to scenic Calypso, NC. Changing a tire when it is 100 deg F outside is annoying. Add to that the lug nuts being about 120 deg and RUSTED on the studs. So really annoying. Anyway we called the JG and they were super nice. The Gentle Suit were playing on our equipment. Well, with the exception of my Twin Reverb amplifier which took a powder at School Kids Records. ANNOYED? YES I WAS. So we chugged down to Wilmington hoping the other dry-rotted tire didn't follow suit. It did not.

We played a really fun set following The Gentle Suit. (I wished they had played a little longer because they are all kinds of awesome.) Erlers let me use his amplifier head/cabinet. Wow, Tiny Terror. What a great amp?!

So things went pretty well despite the insane heat, tire problems. We did get to spend 3 HOURS at Wal-Mart (I know! But there were the only place we could find open on a Sunday that had our gi-normous truck tires). Thanks Wal-Nutz. I normally have a long rant about stuff like this but, no one really wants to read that. :D

I guess they were pretty happy with our performance as we will be back at the Juggling Gypsy with ANGWISH on 8/30. See you there.

Guys, c'mon..get in the truuuuck

LOLZ. We're going to be getting our rolling bake on tomorrow. The F250 Diesel that is conveying us to Raleigh & Wilmington only has 2-60 air. So if you folks down east smell something sweaty coming up from the Southern Piedmont, it aint Mayor McCheese.

Saturday, May 31, 2008

Holy Heck! That was fun.

We had a great time with the fine people at the Keg and Cue last night. As usual Angwish was providing their unique blend of romantic interpretation of Western Civilization and Kathleen was serving up the cold beverages. Stay tuned for more shows at the K & C!

minervamerica

MP3

She’s got factories for eyes
And you can tell by her gaze
That these shipbuilding waves
Are in undertow of lives

She’s resourced at lip service
But this lift is in disservice
And enlisting the servants
Last call for service

She’s got
more arms than venus
she’s got

She’s got you between her thighs
And everything she says
Does not explain her legs
As they tighten and surmise

Her hands from Coin and Pawn
Wear a ring right through your nose
And everywhere she knows
She’s got it going on

She’s got
more arms than venus
she’s got

The voices that she hears
Come right down a wire
Amendments are acquired
Decrypted to her ears

The sermon that she mounts
Helps to defray the cost
And every life that’s lost
Shows how a body counts

She’s got
more arms than venus
she’s got

The story that she tells
Goes by the metes and bounds
It grows by leaps and bounds
And everywhere it swells

The sword’s become her pen
But her thunderbolts don’t spark
This virgin’s on a lark
But she’s fucking wide open

She’s got
more arms than venus
she’s got

Milestone/Manifest/Keg and Cue (FRIDAY 5/30)

Hey everyone, thanks so much for coming out and supporting us at the two shows on Saturday. Reaction was pretty good on the new song: Minervamerica. I hope to have a mix of it up on the internet's finer repositories for audio, maybe even today. A Special thanks to Hardcore Lounge for setting up the Milestone show and to ANGWISH for stepping up to open the show. It is always such a pleasure to play with them. So much so that we're doing it again this Friday (5/30) at the Keg & Cue. Show starts at 8pm. Don't miss it.

Progress Report on Steve's New Drum Kit

F. Yeah!

Even Steven. The CM cancelled so we're playing 6/7 at the School Kids in Chapel Hill. Ha. Last time I played a record store there we got stuck in the snow in Graham. I reckon it's more likely to hit a plague of toads or summat.

New Songs!

Yes chilrens. If you come to see Illicitizen next weekend. We promise at least one new one and one that only our SC peeps have heard. (Well, except for you old timers.) Steve and Maria were in the studio tracking the rhythm for the newest song. I did the guitar part last night. I might even get this vocal done this morning!
Also, stay tuned for Steve's new drums. Jimmy V. Poplin is custom building him a kit to replace the venerable and questionable Frocky drums.
We'll be posting pictures and audio of the new one soon. So stay tuned. Don't touch that dial.
**Extra Credit**
We also tracked "Therapy" all over, since all the recordings we have up are with the drum machine. We are gearing up for redoing ALL the tracks that we've posted online. Once the drums get here we'll likely take a little time off from playing shows to knock these outs.

6/7 Cancelled Common Market.

Well I just found out our 6/7 show on the Patio at the Common Market is off. Apparently some under age twat got the owner pinched by A.L.E. We're trying to reschedule when they start getting shows on again. Anyone with an open date for 6/7 in the Carolinas drop me a line.

get out there and

VOTE today (NC and Indiana).

Wacky birthday coincidences

David Byrne 5/14
Brian Eno 5/15
Robert Fripp 5/16
Bill Bruford 5/17

There's only like 1 degree of separation between these guys. I didn't research this. So I'm likely wrong. But oh well.

What Happened Yesterday

We both went to Eric's job in the morning.
Breakfast at Showmar's. The One Egg, any style special.
At 8:30am we were at the Register of Deeds bought the license.
Then off to the gym to buff up (get sweaty).
Grabbed the Gold Rush Trolley uptown to the Ivey's building for some Bombay Cuisine.
Purchased a beautiful bouquet of flowers (tulips, daffodils, irises, etc...) on the street at Trade/Tryon.
We rode the trolley back to the Gov't Center.
We walked down to the Courthouse and found out you cannot bring cameras into the building. After walking back to the Government Center Eric Cook was met.
Strings were pulled. Pics were taken.
Witnesses Eric Cook and Emerson Morrison joined the party. Charlie Cowins joined the fray fresh on his return from California. It was a busy day off for Charlie.
Steve DeCaro played phone tag with us, but was delayed by work.
We waited 2nd or 3rd in line (some PEOPLE jumped the line) to get married.
The Magistrate was running a little late. But when it was our turn we filed into the office and the whole beautiful secular ceremony took about 5 minutes.
We met up with Steve back at Eric's office.
We said goodbye to everyone and let the ladies in the office know what had gone on today.
We then went over to the Penguin and enjoyed some Guinness and shots of Jameson's. Eric had a cheeseburger and Maria had a tuna melt. A delicious variety of juke-box goodness was enjoyed.
We headed home and had a relaxing evening in.

Thanks for all the well wishing, everybody.

Yeah, it is May 24 @ the World's Famous Milestone Club. With Hardcore Lounge headlining. I have not played with Chris Johnson since Cyclone Mack and Frocky Jack collided msuically on Monroe Rd in the nineties.
&
Don't forget we'll be at Ground Zero on May 10 with The Gentle Suit!

April 26 show CANCELLED

Sorry about this everyone. We were really looking forward to having the Choir Quit and The Good Graces come to town. I got a call this morning from Craig at the SK Net and apparently there was some conflict/malfunction that has led to this show being cancelled. We will try to re-book for another date later.

Eric | Maria | Steve

Also NOTE: the 5/23 show at the Milestone seems to have been moved to 5/24. Stay tuned for more details.

Sunday, April 6, 2008

Thanks for coming out

friday. Despite the awful weather and competing entertainment options; it was nice to see some folks at the Milestone.

Sunday, March 30, 2008

FRIDAY, uh and thanks for last night.

Wow, still bleary eyed from last night's show. Thanks to everyone who showed up and supported us, The Gentle Suit and The Side. It was really heart warming to have some warm bodies there for Steve's first show in town. Now then, ahem...

This is gonna be hella fun as 1) it's the World Famous Milestone; and 2)We're playing with 'thank you, spaceman' and they are all going to be dressed like killer bees. (ok I lied about the killer bee thing). There are also rumors that gogoPilot is performing only with chainsaws and egg-beaters(of course I started that rumor...so you know...).

Some video from January 26th Show

So, come out Saturday and see how far we've come now with a human drummer (Steve DeCaro). This is our first show in Charlotte with a real drummer. It ought to be some fun.

pardon the construction

On Elizabeth Avenue.

If you are coming out to Saturday night's show @ the SK Net, be aware that they've REALLY torn up most of Elzabeth. You might have an easier time parking by coming in from Independence at the Double Door and just driving around back. I feel for those businesses in the area. They have had that street torn up for months down on the CPCC end.

Steve's brother Vince was able to get a few from the R3V3RB show, I'll try to post them as soon as I get some.

MEAT PUPPETS (still awesome)

Yayyyy. I finally got to see the Meat Puppets. It is so good to see (albeit grizzled) Chris Kirkwood out of the slammer/rehab etc... He was quite the energetic bass playinz last night. The only shortcoming was the fact that they were opening for some band called Built to Spill who I guess are some kind of big deal. But you know, they weren't the fucking Meat Puppets. And Meat Puppets rocked...in a southwestern~countrified~punk rock sort of way. I'd gotten to see Kurt Kirkwood with Eyes Adrift (twice) and thought I'd never see both brother playing together again. In any event, it was a good show. I could have stood more Puppets and less Spill but they were fine. I just couldn't really get into what their songs were about.
The Meat Puppets : The Meat Puppets are an American rock band formed in January 1980, in Paradise Valley, Arizona. The group's classic lineup was Curt Kirkwood (guitar/vocals), his brother Cris Kirkwood (bass guitar), and Derrick Bostrom (drums). One of the more notable groups on the roster of SST Records (who released most of their early albums), the Meat Puppets could be broadly classified as punk rock, but like most of their SST peers, the Meat Puppets established their own unique style, blending punk with country and psychedelic rock, and featuring Curt's warbling vocals.

Through the Airwaaaaaaves...

Our wonderful friend and adopted step-dad Michael Duane (Dust Devils, Atlantic Drone, Ancients, Assisi House) is going to spin Estate on the Bradford, UK community radio tomorrow. Since 'Estate' is about the homeless and Michael's job is promoting awareness & assistance with and of this issue it is a pretty good fit.
it's 1:30 pm EST... it's tight here too...[-he is responding top my message about how our shelters are overflowing in Charlotte].

we're starting at an hostel for battered women in a couple of weeks, feel a bit out of my depth with that, at least i've got Tori with me... one of the soundest women i've met in a long while, damn glad i employed her... i knew there must be a reason...

i'll make a post about the radio tomoz... it's mostly stuff we've recorded on the road visiting all these hostels... & some of the stuff is rather good... & the stories behind them are emblazoned on my brain...

Mxxx

So apparently we are going from 'Therapy' on 106.5 FM Sunday to 'Estate' on 106.6 FM Thursday (tune in on the www at 1:30pm EST). Hey we only had to traverse one ocean to go up 100,00 Hertz. Oh well the ONLY important thing is that it might help bring some attention to the issue of the homeless and hopefully get some people to help out.

Monday, January 21, 2008

Big Thanks

...to Divakar on WEND (106.5 FM) last night for spinning 'Therapy' again on the air. It is always so reassuring to hear your stuff played on the broadcast radio.
BIG SHOW SATURDAY KIDS, you do not want to miss out. Three super bands (ok, 2 super bands and illicitizen)at Snug Harbor. We hope to see you there.

What if we tried out a drummer?

What would people think? Would it be surrender? Would it be victory? Would it hurt? Would we become an option for them while they became a priority for us? Would we become dependent and suffer withdrawals? Would it require larger doses of drums to achieve the same effect after a period of use? Would this be a gateway instrument that caused us to end up begging on the street for spare change to tempt that ace bandeneon player? Would the convention of having a drummer birth other conventions? Would we start doing Meat Loaf covers? Bar Mitzvahs? Would we get in arguments about which ZZ Top albums were REALLY the important ones? Would I go looking for someone like Phil Collins (only because he has worse hair than I do)? What would become of the little synthy bits we use to cover up the 8 beats of count-in starting a song? Why not hire a horn section? Some gospel singers? A !#*%+$^ marching band?
Just wondering...
